Brief description of trial (Data source: BASEC)
Ziel der Studie ist der Vergleich der neuen dreidimensionalen (3D) mit der bisher angewandten zweidimensionalen (2D) endoskopischen Operationstechnik bei Operationen der Nasennebenhöhlen bei Patienten mit chronischer Nasennebenhöhlenentzündung.

Die chronische Entzündung der Nasennebenhöhlen (chronische Rhinosinusitis) kommt in etwas 3-5% der Bevölkerung vor und führt je nach Schweregrad unter anderem zur Behinderung der Nasenatmung, des Riechsinnes und zu vermehrter Sekretsekretion. Falls die Therapie mit Medikamenten nicht genügend wirksam ist, steht als effektive Therapie eine operative Erweiterung der betroffenen blockierten Nasennebenhöhlen zur Verfügung. Diese häufig durchgeführte Operation wird standardmässig mit Endoskopen und Kamera durchgeführt. Die bisherigen hochauflösenden Kameras führen wie bei einem normalen Fernseher zu einem Bild, welches "zweidimensional" ist (2D Technik). Die Weiterentwicklung der Technik erlaubt es heute, die Endoskope mit zwei Kanälen auszustatten, was den Einsatz einer "dreidimensionalen" Kamera erlaubt und zu einem dreidimensionalem Bild mit räumlichem Effekt führt (3D Technik). Diese neue Technik kann möglicherweise einen Vorteil für den Chirurgen darstellen, welcher so die Operation noch besser durchführen kann.

Operation der Nasennebenhöhlen, eine Seite mit der endoskopischen 2D Technik, die andere Seite mit der 3D Technik. Gemessen wird die notwendige Zeit pro Seite und auch die subjektive Beurteilung der jeweiligen Endoskopie Technik durch den Nasennebenhöhlen-Chirurgen
Interventions

A total of 80 patients with chronic rhinosinusitis are evaluated. A Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) procedure is performed. All participants receive the 2D-endoscopic technique on one side, and 3D-endioscopic technique on the other side. In the first of the 20 patients, the side which is operated by the 2D-endoscope is determined by hazard (Los). In the further patients, the side is alternated after each patient.
There are four individual rhinosurgeons at four centers operating and evaluating 20 patients each.
The centers are Graz (Prof. V. Tomazic), Austria, Munich (Prof. A. Leunig), Germany, Ulm (PD Dr. F. Sommer), Germany and Zurich (KD Dr. H.R. Briner), Switzerland.
There is only the measurement of time of the procedure using the 2D and the 3D camera on each side during the procedure which is performed. Additionally, a questionnaire is filled by the surgeon asking for subjective impressions using the 2D or 3D camera. This questionnaire is designed for this study in order to look for subjective differences of the camera techniques. There is no follow up for the study after the procedure.
Criteria for participation in trial

Patienten mit chronischer Nasennebenhöhlenentzündung, welche auf die medikamentösen Massnahmen unzureichend ansprechen und eine operative Eröffnung der Nasennebenhöhlen notwendig ist.
Exclusion criteria

Frühere Operationen an den Nasennebenhöhlen.
Einseitige, asymmetrische Erkrankungen.
Alter unter 18 Jahren.
Inclusion/Exclusion Criteria

Inclusion criteria:
1. Adult aged 18 years or above
2. Chronic rhinosinusitis
3. Candidate for endoscopic sinus surgery
Exclusion criteria:
1. Age below 18 years
2. Previous sinus operations
3. Unilateral or asymmetric disease
4. Severe comorbidities such as bleeding disorders
5. Inability or unwillingness to give consent for the study
