Mit zunehmendem Alter sowie im Verlauf von krankheitsbedingten Abbauprozessen des Gehirns treten häufig Gedächtnisprobleme auf. Das episodische Gedächtnis, welches die Speicherung und den Abruf persönlicher Erlebnisse und Informationen umfasst, ist davon besonders betroffen. Ob sich eine leichte elektrische Stimulation des Gehirns positiv auf das Erinnerungsvermögen auswirkt, soll in der vorliegenden Studie untersucht werden. Zusätzlich sollen die physiologischen Hintergründe der Änderungen im Gehirn durch die leichte elektrische Stimulation erforscht werden. Vorherige Studien konnten bereits zeigen, dass die sogenannte transkranielle Gleichstromstimulation (kurz: tDCS) die Gedächtnisleistung von jungen und älteren gesunden Erwachsen sowie von Alzheimer Patienten steigert. Allerdings profitieren nicht alle Teilnehmer gleich stark von der Stimulation, was möglicherweise auf individuelle Unterschiede in der Funktionsweise des Gehirns zurückzuführen ist. Um diesen auf den Grund zu gehen, soll in der Studie ein bildgebendes Verfahren, die sogenannte Magnetresonanztomographie (MRT), angewendet werden, um die grundlegende Wirkweise von tDCS zu erforschen. Im Speziellen sollen Unterschiede in der Verbindung und Aktivität bestimmter Hirnareale sowie Konzentrationsänderungen von Botenstoffen im Gehirn genauer betrachtet werden.
Die gewonnenen Erkenntnisse sollen zukünftig dazu beitragen, die Anwendung von tDCS zu verbessern, um möglichst zuverlässige Stimulationseffekte zu erzielen. Dies wiederum ist eine Voraussetzung für eine ausgeweitete Nutzung von tDCS in klinischen Bereichen.
