Brief description of trial (Data source: BASEC)
Rund 1200 Personen, welche einen Rauchstopp anstreben, werden im Rahmen der Studie individuell über 6 Monate begleitet. Um festzustellen, ob die E-Zigaretten (Vaporizer) im Vergleich zu einer Rauchentwöhnungsberatung alleine besser wirken, werden die Teilnehmenden nach dem Zufallsprinzip in zwei Gruppen eingeteilt. Die Hälfte der Teilnehmenden («Interventionsgruppe») wird eine E-Zigarette (Vaporizer) mit nikotinhaltigen Nachfüllflüssigkeiten (e-Liquids) erhalten, die sie beliebig oft nutzen können. Zusätzlich erhalten die Teilnehmenden zu mehreren Zeitpunkten eine Rauchentwöhnungsberatung. Die zweite Hälfte der Teilnehmenden («Kontrollgruppe») erhält ausschliesslich die Rauchentwöhnungsberatung.

Rauchen ist die häufigste vermeidbare Todesursache in der Schweiz. Raucher, die einen Rauchstopp anstreben oder sich weniger Schadstoffen aussetzen möchten, greifen immer häufiger zu tabakfreien elektronischen Zigaretten, auch Vaporizer genannt. Bei diesen Vaporizern wird eine nikotinhaltige Nachfüllflüssigkeit (sogenanntes e-Liquid) zu Dampf erhitzt, welcher inhaliert werden kann. Nachfüllflüssigkeiten gibt es in verschiedenen Aromen mit oder ohne Nikotingehalt.
Momentan ist noch umstritten, ob nikotinhaltige E-Zigaretten (Vaporizer) zur Unterstützung der Rauchentwöhnung nützlich sind. Erste Studien aus anderen Ländern sprechen dafür, sind jedoch noch nicht sehr aussagekräftig, da die Anzahl untersuchter Personen gering war. Zur Sicherheit der E-Zigaretten (Vaporizer) gibt es bisher wenige kontrollierte Studien.

Die Hälfte der Teilnehmenden («Interventionsgruppe») wird eine E-Zigarette (Vaporizer) mit nikotinhaltigen Nachfüllflüssigkeiten (e-Liquids) erhalten, die sie beliebig oft nutzen können. Zusätzlich erhalten die Teilnehmenden zu mehreren Zeitpunkten eine Rauchentwöhnungsberatung. Die zweite Hälfte der Teilnehmenden («Kontrollgruppe») erhält ausschliesslich die Rauchentwöhnungsberatung. Die Teilnehmenden der Kontrollgruppe können nach Ablauf der Studie einen Gutschein im Wert von 30CHF beziehen. Alle Teilnehmenden, auch diejenigen in der Interventionsgruppe, können auf eigene Kosten zusätzliche Hilfsmittel zur Rauchentwöhnung (z.B. Nikotinpflaster, -kaugummi) in Anspruch zu nehmen, dies muss jedoch dem Studienarzt mitgeteilt werden.

Criteria for participation in trial

Raucher und Raucherinnen, die seit mind. 12 Monaten täglich 5 oder mehr Zigaretten rauchen und über 18 Jahre alt sind.
Exclusion criteria

Nicht teilnehmen dürfen schwangere und stillende Frauen bzw. Frauen, die in den nächsten 6 Monaten eine Schwangerschaft planen.
Inclusion/Exclusion Criteria

Inclusion Criteria:
- Informed Consent as documented by signature
- Persons aged 18 or older
- Currently smoking 5 or more cigarettes a day for at least 12 months
- Willing to try to quit smoking within the next 3 months,
- Persons providing a valid phone number, a valid email address and/or a valid postal
address.
Exclusion Criteria:
- Known hypersensitivity or allergy to contents of the e-liquid
- Participation in another study with investigational drug within the 30 days preceding
the baseline visit and during the present study where interactions are to be expected
- Women who are pregnant or breast feeding
- Intention to become pregnant during the course of the scheduled study intervention,
i.e. within the first 6-months of the study
- Persons having used ENDS regularly in the 3 months preceding the baseline visit
- Persons having used nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) or other medications with
demonstrated efficacy as an aid for smoking cessation such as varenicline or bupropion
within the 3 months preceding the baseline visit
- Persons who cannot attend the 6- month follow-up visit for any reason
- Cannot understand instructions delivered in person or by phone, or otherwise unable to
participate in study procedures
