Vorhofflimmern (VF) ist eine Erkrankung, bei der die oberen Herzkammern vibrieren und sich nicht wie normalerweise zusammenziehen. Durch Vorhofflimmern können sich im Herzen Blutgerinnsel bilden.
Es werden voraussichtlich etwa 4.600 Patienten in etwa 690 Studienzentren in diese Studie aufgenommen.
Ihre Studienteilnahme dauert etwa 7 Monate. Sie werden in diesem Zeitraum gebeten, den Studienarzt insgesamt dreimal in seinem Studienzentrum aufzusuchen und 3 Telefongespräche mit dem Studienarzt und/oder seinen Mitarbeitern im Laufe der 6-monatigen Behandlung zu führen; jeder Praxisbesuch dauert etwa 30–60 Minuten und die Telefongespräche werden voraussichtlich etwa 15–30 Minuten in Anspruch nehmen. Am Ende der Studie (Monat 7) werden Sie auch gebeten, eine Nachbeobachtungsvisite wahrzunehmen; dieser findet entweder in Form eines Telefongesprächs oder in der Praxis des Studienarztes statt.

Wenn Sie in dieser Studie der Behandlung mit Apixaban zugeteilt werden, werden Sie gemäss den Anweisungen des Studienarztes entweder 5 mg oder 2,5 mg zweimal täglich einnehmen (die Dosis wird von Ihrem Studienarzt festgelegt).
Wenn Sie der Behandlung mit Warfarin zugeteilt werden, sind die Dosis und die Menge, die Sie einnehmen werden, abhängig von Ihrem Blutbild.

Alle Personen, die unter Vorhofflimmern leiden und bei denen vor kurzem (innerhalb der vergangenen 14 Tage) ein akutes Herzsyndrom- aufgetreten ist und/oder eine Angioplastie durchgeführt wurde.
Ausserdem müssen Sie mindestens 18 Jahre alt sein und können männlich oder weiblich sein.

Andere Erkrankungen als Vorhofflimmern, die eine dauerhafte Behandlung erfordern (z. B. eine künstliche Herzklappe)
Schwere Nierenfunktionsstörung/Nierenversagen
Alle Gegenanzeigen für Warfarin, Apixaban, zusätzlicher Thrombozytenaggregationshemmer (Medikament, welches die Verklumpung von Blutplättchen (Thrombozytenaggregation) hemmt, wie Clopidogrel (Plavix), Prasugrel (Effient, Efient), Ticagrelor (Brilique)) oder Aspirin
Patienten mit bekannter bestehender Blutung

Inclusion Criteria:
- Adults with either active or a history of non-valvular atrial fibrillation or flutter
with the planned or existing use of an oral anticoagulant for prophylaxis of
thromboembolism. In addition, subjects must have had an acute coronary syndrome or
percutaneous coronary intervention with a stent within the prior 14 days
- Planned use of antiplatelet agents for at least 1 to 6 months
- Males and Females = 18 years of age
- Women of childbearing potential must have a negative serum or urine pregnancy test
within 24 hours prior to the start of study drug
Exclusion Criteria:
- Conditions other than atrial fibrillation that require chronic anticoagulation. (e.g.
prosthetic mechanical heart valve)
- Severe renal insufficiency (serum creatinine > 2.5 mg/dL or a calculated creatinine
clearance < 30 mL/min
- Patients with a history of intracranial hemorrhage
- Patients have had or will undergo Coronary arterial bypass graft (CABG) for their
index acute coronary syndrome (ACS) event
- Patients with known ongoing bleeding and patients with known coagulopathies
- Any contraindications or allergies to VKA, apixaban, or to intended P2Y12 antagonists
or to aspirin
